Disk Optimization
Files need to be contiguous for optimum system performance; that is the entire file has to run together on the disk. If you do not have enough contiguous disk space the files become fragmented and system performance goes down. The disk optimizer reads the fragmented files and places them contiguously on the disk. It will also place the most often used files in the center of the disk, this increases performance considerably. Because fragmentation occurs on all computers through normal use, MC recommends a disk optimization utility such as Norton Utilities Speed disk. If you have DOS 6.0 or higher you can use the DOS DEFRAG program, see your DOS manual for details on how DEFRAG works. Disk drive manufacturers and operating systems recommend you stay below 85 percent full on a disk drive. This allows room for existing files to grow and temporary files to be created on your system. If your system is above this range, you will need to clean up the existing data on your drive. If there is nothing that can be deleted or this does not clean up enough space, you may need to look into adding another drive or changing to a larger one. |
